“The 2022 growing conditions were excellent, with above average winter rainfall followed by a cool, late spring. Things took a sudden turn as heat peaks hit us in December and January, stressing the vineyards and making harvest decisions more challenging. It was critical to listen closely to these very particular vineyards - they all have their own idiosyncrasies and our decisions needed to be carefully in tune with each one. We made the decision to pick some or our vineyards earlier to retain freshness, which turned out to be a great move for vintage 2022.
The 2022s are bright, lovely and ready to be enjoyed now,. They will age well, but I suggest drinking them younger than I would the 2021 and 2023 vintages, which both have exceptional ageing potential.
The growing season leading up to the 2023 vintage started with a dry and warm winter followed by optimal conditions for vegetative growth. We received good rain shortly before véraison, which was extremely beneficial and much needed in keeping water-stress levels in check for our dryland bush vines. Dry conditions during the cell division and growth stage resulted in smaller berries, delivering great concentration and excellent flavour development.
The ripening period was lovely and cool, which gave grapes a chance to ripen optimally at a slower rate while maintaining low pH levels and high natural acids, all fundamental for an exceptional vintage.
As a result the 2023 wines have wonderful tension and energy, fantastic analysis and tannin structure — all indicators of a vintage that will stand the test of time. These can be cellared and aged and will most definitely benefit from some time in bottle.”
